About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Still no joy on the loo emptying front.

The meal at the Nags Head was enjoyed by us all. This pub though is a popular venue on a Saturday night and was fully booked throughout the evening so we were asked politely if we could vacate the table before 7 pm. Having reserved the table for 5 pm we had plenty of time to finish the meal.  After departing the pub what to do next? Ah...the Harrington Arms was holding a beer festival just around the corner from the Nags Head so it was a no-brainer really. Those real ales with it's Gin bar were just waiting for a visit. Only downside....no red wine!

Clear skies with a full moon last night, good opportunity for a photo once we arrived back at FS.

As for today t'was a wise move not to depart for Willington and loo emptying although I did start to wonder if the met office had got it wrong. The high winds and rain predicted for between 7 and 8 am didn't materialise until after 10 am. Then it rained for 7 hours. With the emptying of the cassettes still very much on our minds, I walked back to the facilities whilst it was still dry in the hope that maybe the blockage had been cleared. I should have known better... after all, it is a bank holiday! Meeting another of C&RT lock keeper volunteers (who was unaware of the problems of yesterday) he decided to have a peek for himself but was unable to open the door. Instead, he decided on a smell test and promptly wished he hadn't. Another phone call was promised but again not much hope of a successful outcome. Looks like whatever the weather for tomorrow we will have to make tracks for Willington. Just hope those facilities are in working order!

Walking back from the facilities it was even more apparent how lucky we had been in finding a mooring at Sawley. Boats were 4 abreast in more than one place and so far none has moved. Glad now we left yesterday from Sandiacre and not today.

Had a visit from David and Marilyn for tea and cake late morning. Lots to say about everyone's friend enemy Donald Trump. Shame we can't put the worlds to rights just by talking about him.

A meal on Waka Huia tonight. "Bring some red wine" was the parting comment from Marilyn. After all, a white Chardonnay is Marilyn's fav tipple and decent Merlot is mine. That's the two ladies sorted...not sure what David and Ian are gonna be drinking!
