About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

The trouble we had!

Thursday, July 19th

Out of Northern Ireland this morning and back to no data! But with several days to wait before the aerial arrives at Argos, we wanted to continue the Wild Atlantic Way and aim for Slieve League Cliffs, County Donegal. It was a good 70 miles run from our last night's stopping place and one journey I wasn't looking forward to because of the roads. Parts were very good indeed, but those bone shaker bits were a nightmare so much so that when we stopped for lunch and I opened the fridge, nearly everything fell out! Even the shoes in a Lidl special shoe tidy went flying! So the lunch stopping place was right by the river Owentaskiny. An information board by a viewpoint had shown a Salmon ladder along this river so we went in search.

Unfortunately, we saw and found nothing but a pleasant 40 minutes was spent there.  Onwards then to our destination and on arrival up this very narrow road with S bends where we had to reverse because of approaching cars and I might add, the only way in and out of the place so both ways were difficult. On arrival at the car park only to find it full. Blast and blast again. All that way and nowhere to park. Out we went again and this time met another motorhome also trying to find a place. We told him of the situation but he too had to negotiate the road before coming back down. Stopping on the road further along Ian happened to notice two motorhomes coming down the road. One was the chap we had talked to but the other was one that had been parked. So before you knew it Ian had turned the Beast and made his way up that akward road again. We were lucky as a space was available so pulled in, changed shoes and set off to see the cliffs.

Long, long walk to the face. Mostly uphill for a good 2km and my heart was pumping and breathing laboured. Around each bend I thought, this must be it. But no, on and on we went. Then cars started passing us. For goodness sake could we have taken the Beast up this road? Got to the end and t'was a good job we walked as turning in the small car park would not have been easy. And was the climb and walk worth it? Well, the colours on the rocks were vibrant and yes the tallest cliffs in Ireland were impressive but worth the walk? Well, I'm glad we did it but won't be doing it again.

Another 50 miles drive to a place called Maghery. We needed to empty the loo and water up. I was desperate for a shower, after all the last time I showered was about 4 days ago!  Eventually found the place and decided we may as well stay the night. Also, it was raining pretty hard so that was a good enough excuse not to move in my book!
