About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Aussie roads and Apostles.

 Wednesday 23rd
We are now nearing the end of the Great Ocean Road journey. Moved to Port Campbell, 100 km further along. We found another of those out of the way campsites but this time we do have power and water and the toilets and showers are pretty decent too. A small fee was charged which goes to the community but well worth paying for what we have. But..... to get here we encountered the roughest bit of the Great Ocean Road to date. I apologise to all my Aussie readers, I love your country and would happily spend the rest of my days here but your roads!!!! Apart from the highways they are rough as hell and the potholes...reckon you could make swimming pools out of some of them, so deep they are!!! It's a wonder one's car axles haven't snapped clean in two. Signs are everywhere on the roads making one aware of uneven surface or danger ahead. Wouldn't repairing them be better???

And this was one of the better ones!
 .
Loads of roadworks but not repairing potholes.
 The site at Port Campbell.

Lovely and rural.
It wasn't long before we unhitched the van and was off to see the 12 Apostles. Choose the wrong time because coachloads, and I mean coachloads, of Chinese tourists all flocked to the same lookout. Almost impossible to get anywhere near to the front and every one had to have their photo taken!!! We gave up in the end but did manage to fight our way to the front for a couple of photos.

Sun was out but it was only 12 °C

Away from the crowds and a walk to Sherbrook river and thunder cave

Sherbrook river on the right.

 Thunder Cave

And the inlet to it.

Because we couldn't take the photos we wanted we may return to the Apostles tomorrow before leaving for Warrnambool.

And another new bird to add to my list,

Rufuous Bristle Bird.

Irene, this winter has made a mess of our roads. Rain like we've had is unheard of and its been washing away Road surfaces! We only have so many road workers and now thousands of kms of damaged roads to repair. You should have come last year - the weather was better too. :) Elly

Thanks Elly, Should have taken the weather into consideration. Not something us Brits would imagine. After all, Australia is supposed to be hot, humid and dry with the danger of forest fires. Your right, we did come at the wrong time. Xx Oh our trip to Bendigo is not to far away. Will send you an email once we have it confirmed.Xx
