About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Disney Magic arrives in Liverpool, and a moon comes out early!

Sunday 12th

More fireworks last night! And all because a cruise liner had arrived in Liverpool. But I'm getting ahead of myself so should start at the beginning.

The festival was into it's last day and numbers were noticeably down. Because of the cruise ships arrival, many had gone to the docks to wonder at it's size and loads of children had dressed for the occasion as Disney characters. We also walked in, not especially to see the ship, but to book a tour under Liverpool One (shopping complex) to view the The Old Dock. It has an enclosed wet dock that was found during excavations in 2001 after being buried since 1826. The developers kept it intact when it was discovered and have since made it accessible to the public free of charge as an important reminder of Liverpool's historic status.

First glimpse of the ship. Notice how near to the canal link it is.

Shame the day was so wet.
After booking the tour for Tuesday, we spent time milling amongst the crowds and taking in the sights. We decided to go into the slavery museum (especially as it was tipping it down) free of charge but a donation box was nearby with a suggested sum of £4. Then having a coffee on the third floor and looking out of the window, two narrowboats were making their way to Salthouse dock.

Looking out of the window, into view came.....

After spending 5 hours dodging the showers and the crowds we walked the mile or so back to the village. Most of the stalls had been packed away and some boats even on the move. Barry and Sandra on AREANDRE were one of those early departures heading off to their next festival at Middlewich.
Having spoken to the Harbour master earlier and expressing our concern at staying between bridges by ourselves (Police no longer on duty from Tuesday) it was agreed that we should move on Monday to be nearer to the main site. At least 30 boats would have left by then so space a plenty.

So back to last night. We again had youths by the bridge and saying good by to Barry and Sandra as the came past, a load of shouting from the bridge made us look up only to be greeted by the sight of a bare bottom! Not just briefly but mooning at us for at least a minute. We all laughed and cheered although we shouldn't really have encouraged such behaviour. Chatting to the Police about it later one of them said, I hope you asked if they had properly wiped their bottom before showing us!! Brilliant retort I thought. Shame I hadn't thought of that.. Then just as we were about to depart for bed the fireworks started. Managed to see some of it but to many trees to make viewing easy. So a late night it was again. Never mind we can always have a lie in in the morning.

And one more bug that came to visit.

I have let Keith & Diane (Fruits of the Vine) know you have a picture of them on your blog! I think John convinced them it was a worthy trip after our fabulous visits. I am sure you will enjoy it too.

Great photos as always.
