About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

My laptop has come home.

Yea my laptop is back. Guy returned my computer this afternoon with everything working as before but with Windows 7 installed instead of 10. Turns out my hard drive was on it's way out and the Intel chip driver on my HP computer wasn't compatible on the installation of Windows 10 using the solid state drive, hence the start up problems. If I want to replace windows 7 with 10 in the future I will have to remove the solid state drive first. Anyway all programs are back on except some of my downloads such as Skype, Coral Paintshop, Greeting card factory, our printer, i player etc but what I'm most gutted about is no more virtual fishing program called Fish Sim. (not able to download from the web as only available as a bought DVD) Got rid of the disc thinking I wouldn't need it any more. What an idiot!!!! All the others will have to be downloaded once more. Me thinks a trip to our daughter and son in law and their unlimited broadband is the order of the day. Still some good has come of all this. Guy has now removed my old 250GB hard drive with a brand new 1 Terabyte drive. Oh goody.... More photos for me to upload and store on Picasa me thinks!

So one photo today. A moth on a log no doubt over wintering in the bark, got a rude awakening just as I was about to throw said log on the fire. In the nick of time it flew off and, after posing for me, made it's escape through the open window.

Thanks Tom and Jan. Have downloaded FishSim 2 Now all I need to do is replace the 150+ venues I had. Should keep me occupied for a while!

Windows 10 may be back on it sooner than you bargained for, if Microsoft's latest sneaky moves are are true. Apparently they are going to tick the "Windows 10 Upgrade" box by default in the list of monthly updates, so you need to be VERY careful what you allow - even if you don't have automatic updating selected. This is likely to begin next week, so don't be complacent!

There is a nifty programme called "GWX Control Panel" which makes it easy to stop this intrusive behaviour, and remove any already downloaded installation files.

Read the comprehensive user guide which explains all. Use the standalone version if you don't want to install another programme.

Thanks for this Dave. Will certainly be on our gaurd from now on. Think we should also let Guy of Giggles computers know in case he wasnt aware.

The particularly nasty aspect of this sneaky behaviour is that the required installation files are often being downloaded in the background, without the users knowledge. This can a) cause problems if you are using a notebook with a small SSD drive, and b) anyone (like most living afloat) who are relying on mobile broadband with limited monthly data allowances. We are talking several GB's of data, which has resulted in many people having their monthly data cap applied even though they are light users! The only way to avoid this forced download & installation is to turn off automatic updates, and select the "Check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them" Then highlight each one in turn, right click and select "More Information". Only install anything with clear security implications. Ones that talk about "improving your upgrade experience" are a definite no-no. I've just been notified of three "Optional" updates: KB2952664, KB3123862 & KB3135445 - all appear to be trying to encourage Win10 - the last is one that repeatedly comes back, even if you try and hide it. These have been pushed in advance of the regular "Patch Tuesday", which is due next week...

Thanks again Dave. Funny you should mention the sneaky downloads. Yesterday we had 745megabytes gone from our allowence. Maybe this was the reason. Have now done as you advised and will continue to be vigalent.
