About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Loose boat, reluctant horse and Brum

Did so enjoy our first BBQ last night. No end of comments from passers by saying summer must have arrived if the barbie is lit! The dogs came a sniffing, hoping for a sausage maybe, and a few had to be dragged away by their owners!

Far from an interesting day today. In fact apart from having to secure one of C&RT's work barges, and watching a very reluctant horse crossing a lift bridge, its been pretty dull. Only bonus being the weather. Glorious and sunny but still very chilly.

The run into Birmingham doesn't get any better the more one does it. Dismal and depressing and full of the usual amount of graffiti. Even the guillotine lock at Kings Norton Junction was covered with the stuff.

Wow Birmingham was buzzing. Loads and loads of people milling about, in bars and balconies of eateries. A new iron fence has been placed by one of the pubs. Health and Safety no doubt but Ian reckons its to stop the drunkards from doing a nose dive into the canal. We found a mooring without problem, on the side we wanted away from the main thoroughfare and hope to stay for a couple of days......or there again we may change our mind and head off for the Black Country Museum instead. We will make that call on the morn.

Something here has been demolished. Can now see the new Library and PO tower.

That fence will be to stop the constant stream of aspiring long jumpers - many of whom fail costing broken teeth and ribs!

Yes, Andy is right -- the fence is designed to stop people trying to jump the gap. The moorers on the other side were fed up of fishing people out.

Never gave that a thought!!! Reckon they come from the pub all cocky and considerably tipsy and then try and jump the gap!

As always Irene, your pictures are magical! I swear you must have been in the nest with the swans!! Hasn't it been wonderful to enjoy the sun and experience another summer on the rise? Jaqxx

Oh Jaq. You say the nicest things. Xxx Summer is the best time, long days and short nights. Loving the freedom it gives us and the BBQ's. Bit sad that Jade isn't here to enjoy it with us as we still miss her dreadfully, but maybe one day we will have a summer to share with a doggie. Xxxx
