About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Bl++dy idiot with no regard to moored boats!!!!

Gosh we were lucky today 'cause the 24 hour mooring in the upper basin was still vacant. Really didn't expect that especially as quite a number of boats had passed us last night. Ian walked down  early to have a reccy, came back and told me the facilities were also devoid of boats. After a hasty breakfast we were about to start the engine to get going when FS suddenly keeled right over. Rushing outside we were in time to see the boat moored behind us do the same thing. The cause???? Some moron failing to slow down, instead he powered up and raced past us like someone demented. Then, almost immediately behind the moored boat, he did no more then push the throttle into reverse so he could drop off his wife to shop in Lidl! It beggared belief and some very strong language was used toward the boater. What was the point of charging past us only to stop soon after??????

Having finally set off we headed for the York Street Lock. Below were the facilities where we stopped to fill water tank and empty loo. Then, would you credit it, the boat that came past us at a rate of knots came out of the lock. He had winded after his shop and come back down into the basin. Fully expecting him to then proceed to the river I was staggered when he pulled onto a pontoon opposite the 24 hour mooring.  Did he really take his boat up one lock to go to Lidl? (which, incidentally, is very much in walking distance from the basin) I'm shocked at his lack of regard for his fellow boaters so I'm going to name the boat. Shame I cant name him because if I could I sure would! Maybe he thinks he owns the place and we are the interlopers. We will never know as he locked up his boat as soon as he moored and left! Boat was called Roulette 3.

Having once more checked with C&RT about staying and getting the thumbs up, I took myself off for a walk. Ian was busy sorting out the battery for my bait fridge and, as I wasn't allowed to fish in the basin, (asked C&RT and they said no!) it meant he could work away unhindered.

Single locks descending to the river

And looking back

We hope to moor on Tuesday at this pontoon before setting off to Droitwich on Wednesday.

On the 24 hour moorings.

Board wired and ready to connect to the battery.
Saw another Holly Blue along the river bank. It had one very lucky escape. Only just took off in time as this spider made a lunge for it.
