About Us

My photo
In 1977 we hired our first narrowboat from Anglo Welsh at Market Harborough. From that moment our destiny was set. In 2006 we finally purchased our own brand new 57' narrowboat which we named 'Free Spirit'. Our aim is to travel the length and breadth of all the navigable rivers and canals of the UK. This will be our story as it unfolds.

Nearly finished

Ian has done a cracking job. The cooker, cupboards, shelves and kick-boards are all fixed into place and theres not a crooked edge to be seen. Thats not to say he didn't struggle with getting the cupboards straight. The original boat builder obviously had no eye for a straight line and to think we have lived with wonky cupboards for years. It is not in Ian's make up to have things at a angle so the screws went in and then out again and then in again until he was 100% with the finish. So now all that is left is to buy the tiles to finish the job properly. We have seen some we like but I'm wondering if they are a bit too posh for our boat. They are the small square ones with the main colour being cream and the odd fancy red and black tile scattered randomly throughout. We took a piece of our worktop to get some idea what the finished product would be and I must say they look stunning against it. I'm pretty sure these will be what we finish up with. So until then this is the kitchen in it's nearly finished state.

And todays photos:-

The chicken nicked the bread meant for the ducks.

Just give Ian plenty of notice, a plateful of biscuits and an endless supply of coffee and he'll be putty in your hands.(:

I love the new look and it's brightened the galley up no end.

Hi Ian and Irene! Thanks for your comment on todays blog, I've not seen your blog before. What stunning photographs! We're heading in the wrong direction, I'm assuming you're at the other end of Trent Lock, at the top of the Erewash? How far to walk? If we don't see you soon, hope to meet up one day soon. we did go up to the top in 2010, loved looking around D H Lawrence's house.

Good luck with the hospital stuff ...

Hello Sandra & Barry,
The length of the Erewash from Trent Lock to Langley Mill is about 12 miles, much to far to walk unless your super fit. I'm sure our paths will cross one day and until that day comes we wish you both happy cruising.

Irene & Ian Xx
